The one word can mean a lot of things! So let's talk about specific needs:

Elevate it:

Generally when mixing other peoples productions, I'm concerned with preserving all the work done before me and just trying to find the way to elevate that the vision that came in. I aim to absolutely give it as much extra as I can, but not be changing the work or applying a different sense of taste on top of it.

This is done by having a good rough mix submitted with the session. I'll keep this reference up so that I can switch to it at any time. And I'll still do whatever I need to make the mix work, but I'll be doing it while keeping my ear anchored to the way the artists/producer hears things.

By doing this, the mix can often be right the first time... because it still sounds natural to the ears that created it. Just 'better'!

Solve It:

One step more involved can be where a rough does comes in with the session, and it's all there and it works... but it's just not fully doing what the artist/producer thinks it can yet. I can often again stick to the rough so that this can be an easy approval, while trying to solve whatever lacking quality we discussed.

Fix it:

In the event that the job at hand is to make a mix work, where it really hasn't worked well yet. Often this is when there isn't a rough or it would be to distracting to try to reference. This naturally can take a littler longer. As well requires a little more of an open mind as the very goal is change it more than just shine it. But good communication up front can generally go a long way.

Whatever the case I strive to to be your problem solver, to make finishing music easier for those creating it, and to help get the songs out into the world!
